Our Online Laser Training International Programme Director, Dr Godfrey Town was re-certified on 1st May 2018 by RPA 2000 for a further five years to act as a Laser Protection Adviser (LPA) under the Care Standards Act 2000 (Wales & Northern Ireland) and as required in England by councils with unitary powers who regulate service providers using lasers and intense light sources. These jurisdictions in England include London, Essex and Nottinghamshire. The RPA 2000 LPA certificate is evidence of competence in radiation protection for non-ionising radiation and Dr Town holds this for medical, research and teaching.
RPA 2000 was set up in 2000 as a non profit making company, limited by guarantee, for certifying competence in radiation protection practice. It was established by four Professional Societies, namely the Association of University Radiation Protection Officers (AURPO), the Institute of Physics and Engineering in Medicine (IPEM), the Society for Radiological Protection (SRP) and the Institute of Radiation Protection (IRP), which has since been incorporated into the Society for Radiological Protection.
Any person wishing to gain an initial RPA 2000 Certificate of Competence to act as a Laser Protection Adviser (LPA) must create a Portfolio of Evidence that satisfies RPA 2000’s technical criteria. The Certificate of Core Competence remains valid for a period of five years, before the end of which it must be renewed.
