Dr Godfrey Town gave a talk on ‘Update on Home-Use Devices: New Devices, Regulations & Safety’ as an Invited Speaker at the new European Congress on Advanced Treatments and Technologies in Skin & Aesthetics (Skin-Med2019) annual conference held 5th to 8th December 2019 at the Holton Munich City Hotel in Germany.
This talk reviewed recent safety standards including particular requirements for consumer laser products and the progress of the new EC Medical Device Regulations (MDR) which relate to the safety and performance of medical devices and which replace the current EU Directive. Dr Town concluded that there are currently insufficient Notified Bodies for medical devices in the EU and that this will cause a bottleneck in Notified Bodies to test HUDs. This talk considered the likely restrictions on laser and intense light source manufacturers and distributors and the probable impact on marketing of home-use light-based devices to the general public.
