Each jurisdiction has its own requirements in respect of compliance with standards and regulations and the latest national standards and local regulatory requirements are considered within each national module.
In the United Kingdom, the use of lasers and intense light devices is regulated in several jurisdictions (namely, Wales, Northern Ireland, most London borough councils, two Essex councils and all Nottinghamshire county councils). In these jurisdictions, compliance with published British Standards is specified. (e.g. for lasers, BS EN 60601-2-22:2013 ‘Medical electrical equipment. Particular requirements for basic safety and essential performance of surgical, cosmetic, therapeutic and diagnostic laser equipment’ and for intense light sources, BS EN 60601-2-57:2011 ‘Medical electrical equipment. Particular requirements for the basic safety and essential performance of non-laser light source equipment intended for therapeutic, diagnostic and cosmetic/aesthetic use’).
Similar laser standards apply in Australia and are enforced in Queensland, Tasmania and Western Australia.
New voluntary non-surgical treatment education standards have been proposed by Health Education England (HEE) and the Joint Council of Cosmetic Practitioners (JCCP) is setting up a voluntary register of service providers (practitioners) due to start in November 2017 followed by a voluntary register of educational providers in 2018.
Many insurance companies specify the basic training requirements for therapists and healthcare professionals intending to work with lasers and IPLs before offering cover and Online Laser Training has worked with numerous recognised insurance providers to produce compliant courses.
